Got a box today
I got into work today and the entire space under my desk was filled with one box.  I was expecting a delivery but not something big enough to put both my kids in. Inside, the box was filled with plastic packing pockets to fill the empty space.  In the none empty space there where 8 smaller boxes.  In those boxes where 2 plastic packing braces holding a plastic box.  In the plastic box was a...

Why should this apply only to robots?
I think these are a fairly sensible set of rules everyone should follow A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second...

Office construction part 2
For the new office construction I had to unpack the desks I dismantled about a year ago. Then we just had to work out how to configure them.  This room had its floor panels aranged for 3 rows of parallel desks when it was a training room, so the power and network points are in odd places. Yes it did take 3 of us and a white board to try and work it out. In the end we still...

Office construction part 1
We’re getting a load more people starting in the office, so the decision has been made to deep six the QA room and turn it into work spaces.  Needless to say, it falls to team dogsbody to do the work. Got all the kit out of the way : Sorted it all the machines out for storage (they are quite old and exceedingly slow) : Together with a whole heap of cables, rodents and...

Point proven
I was thinking the other day (really hurts doing that) what the stupidest thing I’ve done to prove a point was. I think this is the one … When I was about six one of my friends told me her dad said she had to stop sucking her thumb because it would make her bones stretch.  Being six I thought he was pulling her leg, so I embarked on a six week experiment to prove him wrong. I spent...

Men can dance?
Friday was Saint Georges day.  As is tradition the local morris dancing troupes gather for their annual pub crawl public display. They close the end of my street to traffic and spend an hour or so dancing, so I take pictures. Epic beards on display together with flowery hats and shoes with bells.

Sysadmin mentality
Sysadmins are a funny old lot.   We voluntarily walk into icy / roasting server rooms then spend hours on end being deafened by fans.  Put our hands into razor sharp server racks, poke around high voltage, high current power lines.  Work out of hours so others can have, even after working all your regular time.  Get dragged into spiralling pits of despair by users who should never have been given...

Package of infinite mystery...well....sort of
When I got to work today, there was a box on my desk waiting for me, how mysterious.. Inside the box, was a load of foam packaging and a padded envelope…must be valuable The envelope was not exactly bursting at the seems and inside that….. one solitary serial cable…. Looks like Dell/EMC really value the integrity of their cables, either that or they’re trying...

Disk drives die
In the last couple of days I’ve been having heinous problems with iTunes syncing with my iPhone.  I had been working under the assumption that the artwork was a problem.  Since the upgrade to 9.0.2 the artwork started being a bit fruity.  I had been getting odd things like the artwork for Buzz Out Loud being replaced for random genius mix. Working with that assumption, I went into my iTunes...
